Overview
Designed by Jean Berret and built by Beneteau in France in 1986, the First 405 is a proven fast cruiser with a fin keel and spade rudder configuration that delivers responsive handling and confident upwind performance. With 12.40m length overall, a generous 3.89m beam and 8392 kgs displacement carrying 3490 kgs of ballast, she combines speed with the stability of a true offshore design.
TASMAN has been superbly maintained throughout her life. With the exception of in-mast furling, she remains true to her original specification, which allows an average passage speed of six to seven knots. Her Perkins 4108 diesel provides reliable auxiliary power, while 63.3 sqm of working sail area keeps her moving well in all conditions. She has weathered three Force 7 blows and taken a sea into the cockpit on only two occasions, proof of the hull form that made this model's reputation.
Below decks she offers three double cabins and two bathrooms, making her ideal for family cruising or sailing with friends. Additional water capacity of 401 litres supports extended time away from the dock, and the Eberspacher forced-draft heating extends the season comfortably into spring and autumn. Standard electronics, a dinghy with outboard and a bimini complete the cruising inventory.
During the winter of 2017 the hull was stripped back to the gelcoat, repainted and the keel bolts checked, with the hull found as sound as the day she was launched. The year before, all interior upholstery and headlinings were renewed. She has been based on the beautiful Greek island of Leros since 2009 and is ready for her next Mediterranean season.
